Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 35-year-old woman, Modupeola Bamisade, over an alleged online gadget scam involving more than ₦500 million.

The suspect is accused of defrauding over 100 unsuspecting victims by posing as an online vendor selling iPhones, iPads, and other Apple products.

According to police sources, Bamisade advertised the gadgets online at heavily discounted prices, sometimes offering up to 50 per cent off, to attract buyers.

The police alleged that she worked with social media influencers to promote the supposed sales, convincing customers to make payments for devices that were never delivered.

A source disclosed that after collecting payments, the suspect would repeatedly delay delivery by giving various excuses or stop responding altogether.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted to using influencers as a means of reaching a wider audience and securing customers.

Her arrest followed a report by one of the influencers who became concerned after receiving multiple complaints from buyers who claimed they had been defrauded.

Several victims reportedly visited the police command to identify the suspect after learning of her arrest. One victim said she paid ₦1 million for an iPhone but never received it despite repeated assurances that delivery was imminent.

The police noted that cases of online gadget fraud often involve unusually cheap offers designed to lure unsuspecting buyers.

Security agencies have continued to warn members of the public to verify online vendors before making payments, especially for high-value items.

In a related development, authorities have reiterated their concerns over rising online fraud cases, including fake travel, visa, and dating scams targeting unsuspecting Nigerians.
