Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo passes away at 40

His death was confirmed on Tuesday by close colleagues in the Nigerian entertainment industry, including Funke Akindele, Bolanle Ninalowo, and Godwin Nnadiekwe, all of whom paid emotional tributes to the late movie star.

Funke Akindele, visibly heartbroken by the tragic news, shared on her Instagram story, “Hmmmmmm. Rest in peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace, Alex. ‘Ore mi like you fondly called me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together. Rest in Peace, Alex.”

Bolanle Ninalowo, who is currently in the United States, also publicly mourned the actor’s passing, writing, “Rest on, Alex. May God heal your family and us all.”

Godwin Nnadiekwe also expressed his deep pain over the loss, stating, “I’m struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul, and I’m lost for words because this wasn’t the plan, Alex Ekubo. To think you already prepared your Will — It’s heartbroken, I can’t quite describe. Rest well, my friend.”

As of the time of filing this report, Alexx Ekubo’s family has yet to officially release a public statement regarding his death.

Before news of his passing broke, fans had already been expressing serious concerns over the actor’s wellbeing following his prolonged absence from social media.

The beloved movie star had not made any Instagram posts since December 30, 2024, sparking widespread speculation and conversations surrounding his health and personal struggles.

Concern intensified after a recent video surfaced online showing Ekubo making his first public appearance in months.

In the viral footage, he was seen interacting with children while appearing noticeably slimmer, quieter, and more subdued than fans were used to seeing.

The clip, originally shared on X by user @AsakyGRN, was captioned, “Alex Ekubo spotted for the first time since disappearing from social media.”

The video immediately triggered emotional reactions across social media, with many fans noting his changed physical appearance and questioning whether he was truly okay.

Prior to his demise, Ekubo had openly dismissed growing public concerns about his marital status, insisting that his primary focus remained financial success and advancing his career in Nollywood.

His past relationship with former fiancée Fancy Acholonu had also remained a topic of public discussion over the years.

In January 2023, Acholonu revealed in an interview that despite dating the actor for five years, they never had any intimacy during their relationship.

The US-based model had previously called off their planned wedding in December 2021, a move that generated significant public attention.

She later apologised publicly and reaffirmed her love for the actor, saying, “like our shirt says, Nothing makes sense when we’re apart @alexxekubo you still have my heart.

“I miss you, I love you, and I’m truly sorry for all the hurt & pain you and your family went through with our breakup.”

Acholonu admitted that her earlier actions were emotionally driven and acknowledged that she could have handled the situation differently.
